There are many over-the-counter teeth whitening products available, but professional whitening systems are safer and more effective. Our Surrey dentists explain why.
The main issue with over-the-counter whitening treatments is that they are really not very effective. These products mostly only remove surface stains, and while that can certainly help, it does not result in a significantly whiter smile.
In addition, products like whitening strips, toothpastes and rinses only whiten the natural teeth, and so if you happen to have dental restorations (such as crowns or veneers), your over-the-counter whitening aid will not affect their colour.
Professional teeth whitening at our Delta dentist’s office is usually done as part of a dental restoration plan in conjunction with other restorative treatments. This means you can whiten your teeth first, and then have the restorations completed to match the new, whiter colour, resulting in a more consistent smile.
Professional whitening products remove stains, but they also lighten the actual colour of your teeth, providing an overall whiter smile.
So, while they are somewhat more expensive than over the counter products, professional whitening systems are well worth the additional cost.
